Wear a Hat for Kat:

To help raise awareness of the importance mental health understanding Danuta organized a "Hat Day" for May -Mental Health Month at the Voorhees Breakfast Rotary Club. The funds raised were donated to the Alzheimer's Association.

This daily correspondence between schools she attended and us gives you a glimpse of our daily life. Most parents of typical children do not communicate on daily basis with the teachers. This gives a reader an insight to how important daily communication is for a child with autism.

Kat has attended school since she was 3 years old. These are school notes that were result of correspondence with her parents and her teachers. We have made comments at a later date reflecting back on the impact of these events. Kats School Notes Index

Hi ! In gym today they practiced for field day which w/ be on 6/21 - Friday 9 - 12 ,lunch then home @ 1:00. It's a 1/2 for students . She did the scooters , potato sack &3legged races . Ask her about these . While visiting the kitchen this AM - Kat stuck her finger into the icing of a freshly baked cupcake ! And then smiled while she licked it off . We gave her the cupcake & I told her, all she had to do was ask . NO journal today - are they at home ? I handed her a piece of paper but she started writing sentences . Ask her where is the cupcake ? She say - the cupcake is in Kat's belly !

Hi ! I guess everyone must be away - I haven't heard from you since the 30th. Also - the w/s need replacing . She really worked hard today .

* A little teary early in the A . M, about 9 - 9:15 . She cried as she wrote in her journal . I said let's go outside in the hall she said "NO ." I asked why are you crying - she replied "because I am sad ." Then said - " Kat is a baby - face ". I said, " Kat NO crying or we'll go home ." She said "NO home" & I brought her some tissues & she brightened up & stopped crying & sniffling . Oh well - don't know what brought this on . It's 9:30 & she's fine & working hard. She had some minor difficulty w/ a few of the w/s . I noted the problems she had on each one . She only has difficulty on some of them w/ "s" - & some of them she just breezes through . A good day .

Sorry , I have been very busy and have not had a chance to write for a while. I updated w/s's last night. There should be enough to keep hergoing. She was a little sad during sessions of therapy yesterday. My understanding is she will be coming home at 10:30 today. If this is not the case I can be reached at 555 - 5555 . Have a good day ! ! !

Hi ! Called the bus company & told them to p/u Kat @ school @ 10:30 on M -T-W until the end of school . There were not aware of this . Now it's all arranged . She will go home @ 1:00 on TR & F w/ R. , right ? Any changes please let me know .

We saw the middle school band this AM - ( Bridget too ! ) & she really enjoyed it . A good day !

Today R. will be at school 10:00 - 10:30 and will keep Kat at school through lunch . Tomorrow R. has cancelled so Kat must be picked up by Bus Co. at 10:30 to go home. Let me know if you are going to contact Bus Co. for tomorrow or if I should. Have a good day!

Hi ! Good morning ! I took care of the bus - called them this AM & they will p/u Kat on Friday @ 10:30 this wk. only. Thanks for letting me know. She's working steadily (9:10 - 9:40)& quietly w/o any odd behaviors! She's speaking to me in whispers & is acting very appropriate ! ! I'm really pleased .

Kat needs a baby picture for a surprise scarpbook for Mrs . A. Don't expect to get the picture back. The picture needs to be in by June 14th. C. is collecting them. Behaviors continue to be great . Talking is down . Very appropriate . Her attention in art was a little down , but still worked well when told to. Kat worked nicely on her own in the classroom . She did a couple of math worksheets very quietly before going to lunch.Great day !

Thanks for taking care of the bus today. I think there are enough worksheets to get her through today. Appears as though she was very productive yesterday. We are enclosing a baby picture for the scrap book. Have a good weekend ! ! !

Hi ! Don't forget to let me know about her "birthday party" on Fri. 6/14. Do you want it in the AM or right after recess ? In art , finally finished the weaving ! Now working on completing the bicycle picture . She's doing a fantasic job - ! ! coloring over the pencil line by herself w/ minimal directions/assistance from me . She is choosing the colors , I'm just pointing to the diff . parts of the bike(every now & then when she stops ) & saying " How about the seat ? or Don't forget the wheels . " or "what else ? " Back in class, instead of doing w/s I had her write in her journal , everything she did in ART. I prompted her w/ - what else & she asked me how to spell certain words & she used correct punctation w/ " walked " in the kitchen . " Agreat day !

Hi E. , Kat had an evaluation yesterday at Bancroft she did greatcompared to last year needed very little assistance from me . The party, if we could do it 6/14 in the morning it would be better for me . let me know a good time .

Hi ! Friday @ 10:15 will be fine for the party -right after art . They won't have gym on Fri . as special times are changed . PE is @ 9:10 - the same as art . She'll be in the class from 10:15 thru lunch recess . She had a very good AM worked quietly & hard !

Hi ! We watched a movie in music today . Had to keep her refocused on it . She wasn't interested & kept wanting to lay her head down on her desk . Otherwise - good behavior . Back in the room - she ran to her journal & wrote in it " I watched a movie " ! ! NO prompt at all ! Wow ! Read her journal from today . after that sentence she & I talked & she wrote up a storm about our walk & what she saw & did . A great AM!

Hi ! I think expanding her expressive language skills - that's what she says after she processes info. & Working on reviewing Dolch words & phrases would be beneficial to her . High frequency Dolch words w/ expand her sight vocabulary . Also - the experience stories she writes (journal) now,will also help increase vocab. & lang . Her academics - math & reading are great . Her math skills seem to be at a 1st grade level & moving along nicely . On a 1st grade level she still needs : sums through 12&sub . from 12, geometry & measurement , add.& sub of 2 digit numbers , fractions , sums through 18 & sub from 18 or less . Whew ! It also depends on which math book you're using & are you following the entire 1st grade math curriculum ? We'll talk more tomorrow & I'll make you a copy of the Dolch phrases, & Basic word list , ok? A good morning & see you tomorrow .

Kat had a great day in art. She finished her painting from last week and began a Snoopy drawing . I had my own Snoopy drawing for Kat to model. Smiliar to drawing imitation, I would draw 1 step then K. would draw 1 step. Worked great ! In class , Kat wrote in her journal . She got a little frustrated with this & began to cry a little. She quickly gained composure and continued with no problem. Kat is excellent when standing in line with her class and walking through the halls - she's very quiet and little to no stim. behaviors! Yea!

Overall a good afternoon !

Went to gym 1st thing & played kickball . She did OK. Backin class I had her write in her journal she became somewhat frustrated because she was writing unfamilar words but I persevered & she finished w/out any incidents .

Kat enjoyed her unbirthday party, especially the candy ! :) After, the class had a math test , so I gave her some math worksheets to do. She worked very nicely and quietly . She did 4 worksheets in 10 min. , all 100% ! Wow! Then she read her books so quietly while the kids finished their tests. Not a sound from Kat. She got a big surprise and then continued reading . We also worked on a fun worksheet that Mrs. A. handed out to the whole class. She readed her books more , then wrote in her journal. Great day !
